In this video produced by Gunnery Sgt. Michael Kropiewnicki, Capt. David Neely, an AV-8B Harrier pilot assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 266 (Reinforced), 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), flies a Harrier sortie from the USS Kearsarge (LHD3), Mediterranean Sea, March 28, 2013. This over-the-shoulder video gives some idea of the uniqueness of Harrier operations as the pioneering aircraft is gradually phased out to be replaced by the F-35B Lightning II, which combines stealth, supersonic speed, and situational awareness to STOVL capability, but is acknowledged as being easier and safer to fly in STOVL modes.
