The New DHS Secretary: Time to Pick a Top Cop for a Tough Job

Here are four other names that merit a good look at and consideration.

1) Cathy Lanier – Chief, Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Washington, D.C. In a city full of dysfunction, nationally as well as locally, Chief Cathy Lanier has been one of the most steadfast and stalwart of persons demonstrating leadership and integrity in job performance. Having served two very different mayors, she’s evolved the MPD to be a far more nimble organization to respond to threats during large scale events (e.g. Inaugurations, political marches, etc.) while still being able to respond to regular crimes that every jurisdiction faces. That’s on top of the other challenges (e.g. 2011 earthquake, flash floods, etc.) to which her department has had to respond.

2) Charles Ramsey, Commissioner, Philadelphia Police Department.  A native of the Windy City, Ramsey started as a beat cop in Chicago, rising through its leadership ranks before becoming the chief of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., in 1998. He was the longest serving chief the MPD ever had when he left in 2006. After serving as a security consultant for several high profile projects, Ramsey was tapped by newly elected Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter to be the top cop for the City of Brotherly Love. In his time he’s walked some tough beats and had some tough assignments … but enough about having to deal with rowdy Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and 76ers fans….
